This entertaining new Audi ad from DDB Spain reintroduces us to the Invisible Man and his Sunset Boulevard-esque relationship with his own fame. Over a gravelly voiceover explaining his career, we see (or rather, dont see) him drinking whiskey by his pool and walking the red carpet, as well as movie posters and other ephemera. Theres even a statue of him, or at least an engraved pillar. He also sounds enough like Ron Perlman that I keep expecting him to say “War, war never changes” as the ad turns into the Fallout 2 menu screen. Audi doesnt really enter the picture until close to the end, when the Invisible Man laments that he never did a car movie—and probably never will, thanks to Audis cruise control, active lane assist, and other self-driving technologies. The idea of self-driving cars making the Invisible Man obsolete is a fun one, and the movie theme is a nice tie-in with the San Sebastián International Film Festival, for which the ads was made. The larger campaign will include print ads, an interview in one of Spains major film magazines, and a promotion rewarding viewers who can identify the seven movie references in the ad. First, Tuesday nights televised debate proved that they share identical definitions of the phrase “with all due respect. ” Each made clear, as they ever-so-politely batted that particular string of words back and forth, that it really means something south of “you conniving layer of pond scum. ” Their eyes told us that they do not like each other. Handel sees a wet-behind-the-ears, Democratic boy toy for Nancy Pelosi, the queen of California. Ossoff looks on her as a has-been who struggles under an outdated load of GOP primary slogans. But something far more important was revealed by the hour-long confrontation on WSB-TV: Both Karen Handel and Jon Ossoff would have us believe that President Donald Trump does not exist. Not in the Sixth District. Neither one would mention Trump voluntarily. They had to be driven to it. When asked where she disagreed with the president, Handel replied, “I am troubled about the deep cuts in scientific research and cancer research” — perhaps anticipating the harsher discussion to come. But she didnt mention Trump by name. Ossoff was asked if he considered the Sixth District race part of the “summer of resistance” to Trump declared by Democrats. “I hope to have the opportunity to work with the president, to get things done for Georgia, ” he replied. Ossoff wouldnt mention Trump by name, either. Now, let us be clear. There is a 70-year-old man with a battleship of a comb-over named Donald Trump, and he lives in the White House. He really, truly exists. Further, Trump is the reason were having this Sixth District contest — and not just because he picked Tom Price as his health care czar. Ossoff shouldnt be neck-and-neck with Handel in a reliably Republican congressional district. But this week, the Gallup polling organization reported that, nationwide, Democrats now have a generic, seven percentage point edge over Republicans – a margin that harkens back to the last days of the George W. Bush administration. Do all of those seven points extend to Georgia? Certainly not. But Democrats here are benefiting enough to make Republicans sweat. Yet despite the fact that Trump is driving this Georgia train, Handel and Ossoff would prefer you to believe that the clothes have no emperor. They both have reasons for not talking about him. To win on June 20, Ossoff needs to woo moderate Republicans and independents to his side. If he bashes Trump personally, Ossoff risks offending those who might have voted for the businessman in November, but have since changed their minds. And so others — i. e. Super PACs – are doing the bashing for him. For her part, Handel needs to reclaim GOP-inclined women who were so chafed by the idea of Donald Trump that they fled into the Hillary Clinton camp last year. Which is why that Atlanta fundraiser that Trump threw for her was closed to the press — photographers, in particular. In fact, one might say that the first Sixth District candidate to invoke Trump loses. If Trump were a nuclear weapon, we would call this a policy of Mutually Assured Destruction. And even though hes not, the acronym may still apply. Yet there is a bright side to this situation. Since the two candidates dared not talk about Trump on Tuesday night, they were forced to talk about themselves. Or not. Both candidates were asked if they would support the extension of MARTA-like rail into the Sixth. Both ducked — unfortunately for gridlocked voters in the district. Each declined to say if they would vote to go to war with Iran, even if the facts were appropriate. And there was comfort in that. Handel said she wouldnt bend when it came to raising taxes. Ossoff said he wouldnt compromise when it came to voting rights. Ossoff said he supported an increase in the minimum wage, and Handel said she did not. Although the way she said it – “I do not support a liveable wage” — needed polishing. With a thinner resume, Ossoff made a smaller target. But Handel couldnt say “Pelosi” often enough, or “California, New York and Massachusetts” — as Ossoffs alleged main sources of financing for his campaign. “Junior staffer” for U. S. Rep. Hank Johnson was a favored description. Handel also came away with two “how dare you” moments — though they may cost her. When the former secretary of state expressed her support for the House Republican bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Ossoff said she had just endorsed an end to insurance protections for those with pre-existing conditions. Handel turned that into an attack on her sister, whom she said had been born without an esophagus. “For you to suggest that I would do anything that would negatively affect her is absolutely outrageous and unacceptable, ” Handel said. But the facts are with Ossoff on that one. Which is why Senate Republicans have all but abandoned the measure. The pair also got into an extended discussion of Handels 2012 role as senior vice president of public policy for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, when the organization attempted to cut off funds to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer-screening. Komen retreated, and Handel made a high-profile exit. “I have held the hands of friends who have fought breast cancer and other types of reproductive cancer. And I will not – not — be lectured by you or anyone else, ” Handel said. On Tuesday, Handel described herself as a cog in the Komen wheel. “For anyone to think that, as one individual employee, I was able to wave a magic wand and make something like that happen — it was a business decision, ultimately decided by the board of Komen, ” she said. But Ossoff was able to argue that, during her unsuccessful primary run for U. Senate, Handel had put herself at the “center” of that drama. All in all, it was a good debate. And if ignoring Trump gives us a better picture of who Jon Ossoff and Karen Handel are, then perhaps thats a fair trade-off. Presumably, the situation will extend to todays Sixth District debate. It appears that The Invisible Man became "invisible" after being turned down by a girl who didn't like him - he's reacted back, and now, the only thing that she can think about is him. She can't shake him from her mind, she can't get him back, she can't do anything to him. He's in her life, for good. He's her "Meanest thought" and her "Darkest fear. The last couple of lines, Look at me, look at me. are basically asking that he no longer be ignored. Again, he's not physically invisible - he can see other people's lives, who they are on the inside, but he is constantly ignored by people who feel they're better than him. As this song was written by Taylor, it would be unlikely that anyone could stretch it to say that this applies to Mercury, that people thought they were better than him because they weren't bisexual. What you can't see can hurt you — The Universal Pictures reboot deviates quite a bit from H. G. Wells' original novel. Elizabeth Moss plays a woman who thinks her abusive ex-lover has risen from the dead to haunt her in The Invisible Man. A young woman believes she is being tormented by the ghost of her abusive ex-boyfriend, only to discover something far worse in The Invisible Man, Universal Pictures' rebooted adaptation of the classic science fiction novel by H. Wells. Judging by the trailer, the new movie will deviate considerably from the source material in some interesting ways to bring Wells' tale into the 21st century. (Spoilers for the 1897 novel and 1933 film below. ) First serialized and then published as a book in 1897, the novel tells the story of a scientist named Griffin, whose research into optics leads him to invent a means of turning himself invisible by chemically altering his body's refractive index to match that of air. Wells cited Plato's Republic as one of his influences, notably a legend involving a magic ring that renders a man invisible, which Plato used to explore whether a person would behave morally if there were no repercussions for bad behavior. The novel opens with Griffin taking a room at a village inn, clad in long coat, hat, and gloves and his face swathed in bandages. He mostly keeps to himself, performing chemistry experiments in his room, but eventually his landlady discovers that he is invisible beneath the heavy clothing. Griffin flees—killing a tramp in the process—and takes refuge with his former medical school colleague, Dr. Kemp, to whom he recounts his tale of inventing the chemicals that rendered him invisible. He has been trying to reverse the invisibility, to no avail. He is also quite mad, telling Kemp of his plans to use his invisibility to launch a murderous "Reign of Terror" on England. Kemp informs the authorities, making him Griffin's first target. Ultimately, Griffin is cornered and beaten to death by an angry mob. His body gradually becomes visible again as he dies. The critically acclaimed 1933 film adaptation by director James Whale starred Claude Rains as the titular Invisible Man and was so successful it spawned several sequels and spinoffs. The film is a reasonably faithful adaptation of Wells' novel, except it is set in 1933 rather than the 1890s, and it fleshes out Griffin's character to include a fiancée named Flora (Gloria Stuart. It's also a more sympathetic treatment of Griffin as a tragic figure, showing him as being driven mad by a scientific experiment gone wrong rather than portraying an unhinged man drunk on power who readily resorts to murder. Cecilia discovers Adrian's experimental apparatus. Adrian goes all stalker with his mind games. Nobody believes Cecilia's story of an invisible man. A mysterious patient swathed in bandages. An invisible Adrian has an advantage over the guards. "There you are. " Universal announced a remake of The Invisible Man in 2016, part of a planned series of films for the studio's Dark Universe project, which draws on the studio's classic monsters. The shared cinematic universe would include The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. But yet again, a major studio discovered that the "Marvel model" is actually pretty difficult to pull off. Universal's 2017 film The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, was a critical and box office failure, and the studio abandoned the shared universe plan to focus on standalone stories. Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions signed on to produce The Invisible Man. Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (best known for the Saw and Insidious franchises) this latest film version seems to combine the original premise with another classic film, Gaslight (1944) about an abusive husband who tries to drive his wife mad. Per the official synopsis: After her abusive ex-boyfriend commits suicide, naïve Cecilia ( Elisabeth Moss) begins to rebuild her life for the better. However, her sense of reality is put into question when she begins to suspect her former boyfriend is not actually dead as she had thought. " The trailer opens with Cecilia fleeing her toxic relationship in the dead of night, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer) only to have the sociopathic Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) smash the car window as they drive away. Cut to the sisters sitting in the office of a lawyer who informs them that Adrian has committed suicide. The twist: he's left Cecilia 5 million in his will, provided she is found to be mentally sound. Cecilia starts rebuilding her life, but mysterious, ominous phenomena keep happening. At first, she thinks Adrian's ghost is haunting her, but her sister and neighbors dismiss that possibility, expressing concern about her mental health. A visit to Adrian's old house convinces Cecilia that her ex is still alive and has figured out how to turn himself invisible, the better to play his mind games to torment her. "He said that wherever I went, he would find me, walk right up to me, and I wouldn't be able to see him. Cecilia says in a voiceover. Naturally, nobody believes her, until an invisible Adrian turns violent. One assumes that Cecilia will have to face down her abuser to finally bring the nightmare to an end. So there you were, back against the oak door of your shared bedroom, sobbing lightly while listening to Shanes occasional sighs from behind said door. You wanted to apologize, but how could you? How would you? Quietly, you picked yourself up off the ground, wiping your wet cheeks and adjusting your clothing. As the door opened slowly, Shanes back was turned to you, shouldve resting against the door frame. “Hey…” you croaked, cringing at how defeated you sounded. Shane turned around, looking at you with matched regret, hand wrapping itself around the back of his own neck and rubbing while averting his gaze. “Hey-“ You two had always been a little rough at communicating what either needed from the start, opting to let destiny take its course and take the day in its own hands. It was no surprise you two stood, staring at each other dumbly. The clock echoed the dampened tension. Tick. “So, ” “I, ” You both stopped, looking at each other and waiting for the other to take lead of the conversation again. Another few seconds passed. “Look, ” “Im sorry, ” You tried again, once again interrupting one another. You tried desperately to suppress the giggle that hung thick in your lungs, but you couldnt help but see the light in such a dark situation. Shane smiled slightly, shoulders relaxing as he let a chuckle out as well. “Im sorry too, ” You watched him for a minute, just observing, admiring. Shane seemed to shy away from your intense stare, but after you found he was absolutely genuine, a reassuring smile made its way onto your face, stress fading little by little. “I didnt mean it, everything I said. Im sorry for getting angry at you, and kicking you out of the room, ” Shane grasped your hand in his, smiling back just enough to let your breathing soothe. “I know you didnt, dont worry. And Im sorry too, I am. I should be more open, especially with how Im feeling instead of immediately jump to conclusions, ” Shane stepped closer, placing his head on your shoulder and sighing into you. Oh God its really happening. In a welcome piece of news for fans of the classic monsters, Universal Pictures is pumping the brakes on their interconnected Dark Universe and teaming up with Blumhouse to swing their classic monster revamps in a new direction with The Invisible Man. Insidious mainstay and Upgrade writer/director Leigh Whannell, will write and direct an update on the classic for Universal and Blumhouse, which wont be focused on building a monster universe Its a major shift for Universal, who assembled an A-list lineup of talent (including Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, and Russell Crowe) for the Dark Universe before the franchise ever fully got off the ground. So how did the deal with Blumhouse come together? With Happy Death Day 2U arriving in theaters this week, I recently hopped on the phone for a chat with Blumhouse chief Jasom Blum and the producer clarified that hes not overseeing a new monster universe for Universal for the time being, nor was that the path he wanted to take To the contrary, the studio is taking it one film at a time and, first and foremost, the project came about because Whannell came up with a great pitch. Image via Blumhouse Blum explained, “I dont believe in saying “Were going to do movies about this” and then trying to find a movie about it. So I didnt believe in going and saying ‘I want to do all these movies, and then try to find directors to do them. We have a director who… weve also done six or seven movies with, pitched us this spectacular idea about Invisible Man. We told him to write it, he wrote it, then we took it to the studio and said ‘Wed love to do this and this is what we would do with it, and they said yes. ” While Blum is naturally keeping the details of Whannells project mum for now, he did talk a bit about what he saw in the pitch and what made him want to take it to Universal. “It was like the Blumhouse version of The Invisible Man, its a lower-budget movie. Its not dependent on special effects, CGI, stunts. Its super character-driven, its really compelling, its trilling, its edgy, it feels new. Those were all things that felt like they fit with what our company does. And it happened to be an Invisible Man story, so it checked both boxes. And we responded to it because I think Leigh is just an A+ director. ” Image via Universal Blum also said that despite the IP appeal of The Invisible Man or any similar classic monster projects that might come down the road, theyre still sticking to Blumhouses signature low budget model. When I asked Blum about what kind of budget theyre aiming for, he explained: “Were definitely in our zone, I dont know if its going to be strictly five [million. Its not going to be more than ten, I dont think. ” Most importantly, Blum and his team are focusing on getting The Invisible Man right before putting the wheels in motion on any other monster movies. However, according to his recent interview with CinePop The Invisible Man is expected to come together quickly, and after that, theyre hopeful to make more. And its possible that one of those movies could come from the old pile of Dark Universe scripts. In fact, Blum doesnt just have the option to look at pre-existing scripts, he says they already have. “We have actually, we havent figured it out yet, but weve looked at a couple older scripts and we would be open to doing that”.

They would come and look and leave checks when they left, a product of the “alchemy of moonlight. ” The narrator hints that part of the schools “magic” is that white donors support it. It is the money of these millionaires that allow the school to look picturesque, but it is also unclear why they are interested in supporting the school. The narrator remembers chauffeuring for one of these millionaires in his junior year, a man named Mr. Norton. He is an old and aristocratic man from Boston, one of the colleges original founders. The narrator is eager to please Mr. Norton, and apologizes for every small mistake. With time to kill before his next meeting, Mr. Norton tells the narrator to drive anywhere he pleases. When the narrator is introduced to Mr. Norton, Mr. Norton seems almost larger than life. Mr. Norton is a man who is responsible for creating the college, the place where the narrator believes his dreams will be fulfilled. In his gratitude, he is willing to do anything for Mr. Norton. Mr. Norton recounts the early days of the college, telling the narrator that he only helped assist the Founders vision. He tells the narrator that the college and its students are part of his “pleasant fate. ” The narrator turns the car down an unfamiliar road, an area that Mr. Norton says he doesnt recognize. Mr. Nortons stories of the Founder make Mr. Norton seem almost mythical to the narrator. In his naïveté, the narrator is also leading Mr. Norton off of the familiar paths to which he is accustomed. The narrator asks Mr. Norton why he became interested in the school. Norton tells him that he feels connected to the destiny of the black race. Norton tells the narrator that he is part of Mr. Nortons fate, and that whatever he choses to do will become part of Mr. Nortons legacy. It is revealed that Mr. Norton donates to the college because of an abstract sense of destiny. Norton is interested in students like the narrator because their success will increase his own legacy and power. His generosity is really selfishness. Mr. Norton then explains a second reason, telling the narrator that he once had a daughter. He exalts his daughters beauty, saying that “to look upon her was to drink and drink and drink again. ” He shows the narrator a miniature portrait of his daughter, and the narrator agrees that she is beautiful. Norton recounts that she became ill and died in Italy, and that his philanthropic work is all done in her memory. Mr. Nortons attachment to his daughter is very strong, and the language he uses to describe her beauty is sexualized. It is subtly implied that there is something out of the ordinary in Mr. Nortons love for his daughter, an unconscious attachment that causes his philanthropy. Mr. Norton tells the narrator “you are my fate. ” He asks the narrator to promise to tell him what he becomes. The narrator finds the conversation to be a little crazy, but agrees to someday tell Mr. Norton his fate. Norton continues to talk about the destiny of “the race, ” saying that the Founder had the power of a king or a god because he influenced so many lives. Mr. Nortons obsessive repetition of “fate” underscores how misguided and fanciful his idea of the college is. He knows nothing about the narrator. To accept Mr. Nortons idea of fate would make the narrator “invisible, ” lost in another mans idea of the world and of him, the narrator. The narrator drives the car into an unfamiliar territory near campus. Norton admits not recognizing the area, which is mostly populated by poor shacks. At Mr. Nortons command, the narrator stops in front of a dingy log cabin. The narrator is suddenly sorry that he drove to this area, as he recognizes that the cabin belongs to Jim Trueblood, “a sharecropper who had brought disgrace upon the black community. ” Once a well-liked singer of spirituals, Trueblood is now reviled up at the college. It becomes clear that Mr. Nortons knowledge of the college is slim, as the area becomes completely unrecognizable to him just a few miles from campus. Outside the bubble of the college, the harsh conditions of the post-slavery south are apparent. Trueblood is similarly a sign of social ills that the wishful thinkers of the college would wish to obscure in order to keep the millionaire's money flowing. The narrator tells Mr. Norton that the cabin is from “slavery times, ” which confuses and disturbs Mr. Outside the cabin, there are two pregnant women washing their clothes. The narrator tries to steer Mr. Norton away from the women, but Mr. Norton insists on trying to talk to them. The narrator tells Mr. Norton that Trueblood is hated at the college but wont explain why. Noticing that there are two pregnant women but only one husband, Mr. Norton asks for an explanation. Reluctantly, the narrator explains that Trueblood has impregnated both his wife and his daughter. The idea that black homes from before the Civil War could still exist shocks the ignorant Mr. Norton, who wishes to believe that his actions have fundamentally changed the conditions of the black community. Norton away from Truebloods cabin, but it is clear that there is a whiff of scandal that attracts Mr. Norton is stunned by this information, and asks repeatedly if the story is true. The narrator affirms it, and Mr. Norton is horrified to an unusual degree. Simultaneously, Trueblood himself appears from his cabin. Norton insists that he must speak with Trueblood. Ashamed but too afraid to disobey, the narrator follows Mr. Norton as he approaches Trueblood, who has a grisly wound on his face. Mr. Nortons reaction to the crime of a man he does not know is disproportionately strong, and Truebloods crime seems closely linked to Mr. Nortons sexualized description of his own daughter. Norton is offended, but secretly he is also titillated. Mr. Norton asks Trueblood if the story of his deed is true and remarks, “You did and are unharmed! ” The narrator notices a trace of envy in his voice. Trueblood replies that he feels all right. Excited, Mr. Norton takes Trueblood into the shade and asks him how he is faring. Trueblood begins to tell his story. By asking to speak with Trueblood, Mr. Norton uses the pretext of philanthropy to mask a voyeuristic desire to hear about Truebloods incest. Trueblood remarks that before the impregnation no one would help him, but now curious people are more than ready to offer him aid. The college tried to pay to send Trueblood away from the campus, but Trueblood refused. When the whites of the area found out what Trueblood did, they listened intently to his story and offered him help as well. He now has more work than ever before. Truebloods crime is an important signal of race relations: to the black community, he is a symbol of the backwards past. However, to whites, he is a symbol of black inferiority, and the local authorities are more than happy to listen to and publicize his story. Trueblood begins by telling them that when they were at their poorest, he, his wife Kate, and their daughter Matty Lou all slept in the same bed together to fight off the cold. While worrying at night, Trueblood hears his daughter saying “Daddy. ” Trueblood begins to weave a poetic tale, evoking his past memories. He wonders if Matty Lou is thinking about a boy he wants to discourage, and Matty Lou begins rubbing against him. He then tells Mr. Norton he fell into a dream. Trueblood is a singer and storyteller, and as he begins to speak his character grows more complicated. The complex nature of his storytelling underlines that he is more than simply an ignorant criminal. His power of speech represents traditions and talents that are native to black culture and cannot be easily wiped away. In his dream, Trueblood goes to see a man named Mr. Broadnax to buy some meat. Against protocol, he goes into the house, only to find no one inside. He walks into a white bedroom. The smell of women is rising, and Trueblood sees a white woman step out of a grandfather clock. Trueblood tries to escape through the clock but the woman is holding him back. He breaks her hold and runs into the clock. Truebloods dream focuses on the appearance of a white woman. Similar to the white woman before the battle royal, the woman in Truebloods dream represents something taboo for a black man. The dream places Truebloods crime in dialogue with the history of white oppression. In the dream, Trueblood runs down a tunnel until he begins to float. He sees a graveyard ahead, then a burst of electric light. Trueblood wakes up to find that he is having sex with Matty Lou, who is hitting him and shaking. Realizing that he is already inside her, Trueblood rationalizes that he enjoys the feeling and needs to see the event through. The narrator tries to interrupt the story, but Mr. Norton silences him. Trueblood rationalizes his crime as something inescapable: he has already begun, so he might as well see his act through. Truebloods terrible crime is reflective of both his hopelessness and the power of a taboo desire that lies deep beneath the social norms of the community. In the story, Truebloods wife Kate discovers the moment of incest and screams. Kate starts throwing objects at Trueblood and then grabs his shotgun. Trueblood pleads with her not to “spill blood, ” and Kate attacks him instead with a hot iron. Trueblood resolves to take his punishment, but when Kate returns with an ax, Trueblood dodges the blow that nearly cuts off his head. He gets a nasty gash. Kate drops the axe and begins to vomit. Kates reaction to the incest reinforces the grotesque nature of Truebloods action. Trueblood has broken one of the central conventions of society: the traditional roles in the family of parent and child. Trueblood first says that he will take Kates punishment of the ax, but ultimately his will to survive is too strong. Trueblood, filled with dread, waits to be struck down by god but is not. Kate takes Matty Lou and the other children away from the house. Trueblood confesses to a preacher, but the preacher is so aghast he sends Trueblood away. Trueblood can only sing the blues. He returns to his house, where Kate and Matty Lou assume he has run off. He discovers that both Kate and Matty Lou are pregnant, but he resolves not to leave them. He concludes, saying that even though his family wont speak to him, hes better off than before. Truebloods story finds no resolution in religion. God doesnt strike him down and the preacher is unable to accept his repentance. Trueblood retreats to singing the blues, a traditional black expression of woes that are too terrible to express any other way. In part, Truebloods story emphasizes the way in which misery is the most typical black story in America, and that whites are happy to help prop up his failure. After hearing Truebloods story, Mr. Norton has become completely pale. The narrator asks if Mr. Norton is all right and convinces the shaken trustee to return to the car. Norton gives a hundred-dollar bill to Trueblood, telling him to buy his children some toys. The narrator is angry with Trueblood for being the one that Mr. Norton rewards, despite his sickening deed. Weakened, Mr. Norton says that he needs to have a “stimulant, ” or a drink, to calm himself. Still wishing to please, the narrator heads for the Golden Day, the only bar nearby. Mr. Norton earlier said that the fate of black people was part of his destiny. If Trueblood can be considered part of Mr. Nortons destiny, the hundred-dollar bill is designed to assuage Mr. Nortons guilt. Norton is again divided, both aroused and horrified by Truebloods story.
